Transport Environmental Impact Assessment

Transport impacts on the environment are caused by the following major modes:

  • Road
  • Rail
  • Shipping
  • Air

Road

Air and Noise

Many types of development generate traffic and this can have a negative impact on the environment. However, in the UK a multi-criteria decision framework for appraising road infrastructure projects has been in place since the late 1990s. This has proven to be so successful that the World Bank has adopted many of its key elements in some of their own assessments.

The UK’s road appraisal system is currently a web-based tool called Web Transport Analysis Guidance, shortened to WebTAG. This is based on well established cost-benefit analysis and environmental impact assessment techniques, drawing on the assessment tools and guidance in the Highways Agency’s comprehensive Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB).

At Phlorum we are experienced in using the WebTag and DMRB assessment methodologies, as well as other assessment and modelling tools to look at the wide range of environmental impacts that transport can cause.

Ecology and Invasive Weeds

Phlorum has extensive experience of dealing with Japanese knotweed, and other invasive plants along road sides. These projects have either been for the management of proposed road projects or for the development /management of land that abuts public highways.

Our staff have also extensive experience in carrying out ecological surveys and managing ecological issues associated with road projects.

Environmental Management

Phlorum staff have acted as environmental managers for various road projects across the UK and Middle East.

Rail

Phlorum is registered on Link-up and has staff qualified with valid Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificates.

Air and Noise

Phlorum staff have carried out air and noise monitoring on several rail projects. These have included construction of new rail through built up areas and works associated with depots and sidings.

Ecology and Invasive Weeds

Phlorum has extensive experience of dealing with Japanese knotweed and other invasive plants throughout the national rail network. This includes work at depots, stations and track-side locations.

Our staff also have extensive experience of carrying out ecological works, including bat surveys, of railway infrastructure and buildings.

Environmental Management

Phlorum staff have been seconded as environmental managers of large infrastructure projects on the rail network. This has involved managing environmental risks, including contaminated land and flood risk assessments.

Shipping and Air

Phlorum has experience of managing the environmental effects of air and shipping operations. These have included ballast water assessments, nuisance issues and airborne emissions from military and commercial airfields, and contamination assessment of former military airfields.
