Flooding in Yalding, Kent

Phlorum director Dr Paul Beckett has recently had an article published in the magazine Sustainable Solutions where he examines flood risk and government policy relating to flooding.

The November/December edition of the magazine published the article entitled ‘Keeping the flood waters at bay’ which describes the summer’s flooding, illustrates business considerations to flooding, and also focuses on the importance of the government’s Planning Policy Statement (PPS) 25. Paul argues how PPS25 highlights the increasing requirement for Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) so that Local Planning Authorities can ensure projects and developments are both safe and feasible, and to ensure that buildings will be insurable when development occurs in flood plains. The full article is available to download as a pdf here.

Wood Slick hits Beaches of Sussex

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Phlorum staff have noticed the large amount of wooden planks littering the beaches of Sussex when travelling to and from work over the past few days. This has been due to the sinking of the Ice Prince, 26 miles off the Dorset Coast, which has resulted in a ‘wood slick’ forming over the weekend and the planks drifting onto beaches many miles further along the coast.

Among our staff members, Huw has been directly affected by this minor environmental disaster since the coastguard turned him away from his usual surfing spot due to the floating debris and piles of planks on the beaches. Thankfully, potentially significant damage to the coastal environment from fuel leaking from the Ice Prince has been averted as rough seas have effectively dispersed any oil slicks.
