Phlorum Ecologists Build Specialist Skills on Dormouse Survey & Handling Course
07-07-2026
Richard and Rebecca recently attended a licensed dormouse handling course, gaining valuable practical experience with this endearing British mammal.
The hazel dormouse is a European Protected Species and is rarely encountered by casual observers as it spends much of its life off the ground amongst hazel scrub, woodland and hedgerows. As a result, hazel dormouse surveys require specialist training, licensed ecologists and carefully developed survey techniques.
The course provided an excellent opportunity to safely handle captively bred dormice, teaching skills to inspect and weigh adults and newborn pups. These practical skills are essential for delivering high quality protected species surveys while maintaining strict welfare requirements.
As an ecological consultancy, Phlorum is proud to invest in the professional development of our team. By expanding our expertise in dormouse surveys and other specialist ecological surveys, we continue to provide clients with robust ecological advice while helping to conserve some of Britain’s most important wildlife.
