Flood Risk Assessment

An estimated 1.8 million residences and 140,000 commercial properties (assets worth £250 billion) are at risk of flooding in the UK.

Under Government planning policy statement (PPS25), the susceptibility of land to flooding is now a material planning consideration. As a result, it is unlikely that developments will gain approval from the Environment Agency without a detailed Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) being carried out.

We can provide FRAs – normally resulting in a 40% saving in costs when compared to other methods – and advice and guidance on Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS).

Our products and solutions are designed to add value to conventional site investigations by:

  • Accurate estimation of flood risks;
  • Rapid and cost effective data collection; and
  • Integration with existing survey data.

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS)

Sustainable Drainage Systems are measures to attenuate water flow and reduce pollution. There are three main types of SUDS:

  • Source Control Techniques - techniques designed to counter increased surface water runoff close to the source (e.g. porous pavements, infiltration trenches and infiltration basins).
  • Permeable Conveyance Systems – techniques to move runoff water slowly towards receiving water courses, allowing storage, filtering and some loss of water through evaporation (e.g. Filter, or French, drains and swales).
  • Passive Treatment Systems – these use natural processes to remove and break down pollutants from surface water runoff (e.g. filter strips, detention basins, retention ponds and wetlands).
